Vertex Welcomes Big Brothers Big Sisters Southeastern PA for Mentoring Day Kick-Off

Berwyn, PA

Vertex Inc., the leading provider of corporate enterprise tax solutions, today welcomed youngsters from Big Brothers Big Sisters Southeastern Pennsylvania (BBBS SEPA) for a day of mentoring at Vertex’s Berwyn offices. The mentoring day, part of the Beyond School Walls program, included one-to-one interaction with a business professional over lunch.

Through a partnership with BBBS SEPA, companies like Vertex give back to the community by hosting children from a nearby school at their corporate office. Vertex is providing a group of middle school students from the Eisenhower Science and Technology Leadership Academy in Norristown with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships.

Twenty-five employees from three local Vertex offices have completed their training and are taking part in this program which introduces students to the idea of a career at an early age and provides them with an opportunity to learn about the corporate world first-hand. Through relationships with "Corporate Bigs," (adults) “Littles” (students) experience what it means to work for a corporation and the educational requirements needed to achieve professional success. The launch of the Beyond School Walls Program is a great example of how volunteerism at Vertex is growing.

The students meet in the workplace with the employee volunteer mentor two to four times per month during the school day for about an hour. A BBBS SEPA Match Support Specialist manages the program on-site while "Bigs" and "Littles" play games, do arts and crafts, tour the office or just talk with one another. BBBS SEPA launched the Beyond School Walls program in 2006 and currently has 25 corporate partners participating in the program.

Corporate leaders from Vertex also attended BBBS SEPA’s Big Night Out Gala last evening that was held in Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, the largest gala and awards ceremony in the organization’s history, as well as its 100th anniversary.
